Analyzing the Game: #2 Montverde Academy vs. Orlando Christian Prep

In our new series Analyzing the Game, ScoreStream will take a look at some of the top games from ranked teams around the country. Today we take a look at the USA Today Game of the Day between #2 Montverde Academy and Orlando Christian Prep.

Orlando Christian Prep_vs_Montverde_twitter_neutralHeadToHead

The Setup: On a 12-game win streak, #2 Montverde Academy will host in the opening round of their own tournament- Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament. Orlando Christian Prep comes in on a 3-game win streak of their own. The game will tip-off at 7PM (EST).

Jim Halley of USA Today’s Players To Watch:

“Montverde Academy players to watch: LSU-bound big man Ben Simmons (28.2 ppg, 12.5 rpg) is considered the No. 1 player in the country.  Senior guard Marcel Ponitka is solid at point guard and junior guards Blake Harris and Howard Washington Jr. are big contributors.

Orlando Christian Prep players to watch: Senior guard Mike Tolbert is the team’s leading scorer at 19.6 points a game. Forward Josh Raoul (16.1 ppg) is another key scorer.”

Factors: Bringing in a 14-8 record, the defending 2A State Champion Orlando Christian Prep averages 59 points a game while holding their opponents to an average score of 56.4. They have played two nationally ranked teams this year (Blanche Ely and DeMatha Catholic) and were beaten significantly in both games. The final scores were 40-62 and 45-71 respectively.

Montverde Academy sits at 23-1 while playing a plethora of the countries top teams. Of the the eight nationally ranked (at some point) teams they played, Montverde’s sole loss came in the City of Palms Classic championship game against nationally Wheeler. Montverde Academy averages 73.4 points per game and allows 56.75 points per game.

Prediction: Montverde Academy has been in their home state in Florida now for the past 10 days and have had five days off. They will want to show off on their home court in the opening round and I see this one playing out as an easy win for Montverde Academy.

Final score prediction: 75-55

Martin Luther King Day weekend brought a ton of high profile basketball tournaments (HoopHall, Bass Pro ToC, Flyin’ To The Hoop…) and major upsets as well!

The weekend started off with the previously unranked Linden Tigers from Linden, NJ taking down the then #2 Roselle Catholic 75-61. Roselle Catholic proceeded to lose consecutive games, while Linden swept there tough schedule proving they were a team destined for national attention.

Some teams like Montverde Academy remained steady, winning their tournament schedule this weekend. However, the wild basketball upsets were capped off yesterday with #1 Findlay Prep losing to unranked Wayne (game recap here!).

“From homeless and hungry, Shortridge star rallies” via IndyStar

“He’s a 6-5 center for Shortridge Magnet High School, he’s the best player on the team, and none of that mattered when he walked to the house his mom was renting and opened the door to a nightmare. No furniture. No lights. Nobody.”

From our friends at IndyStar, written by Gregg Doyel, ScoreStream wanted to highlight this beautiful story of Various. Various Wilson has been tried on and off the court, but has never given up. His story should be motivating and exciting for all athletes.

We tip our hats to you, Various. You are truly inspiring.

Dakota Young: A Story of Redemption

For most teens, that accident might have been a surefire end to a proud career. Not for Young. After he underwent surgery in late September, Young was determined to return to action. He made that happen on December 20, coming off the bench for Fairfield in a loss to Johnson City and drilling a three-pointer from the wing in the final minute.”

This inspiring story is one you have to read and see. The ScoreStream staff is very moved by Dakota Young’s motivation and drive and we can’t wait to see where the rest of his career takes him.
